Our Research
Since 2001 the Company has been working on the development of our proprietary Biomarker Discovery Platform. Unlike other research groups, Genesis Genomics focuses on the mitochondria due to its central role in the path to cancer including cell death and aging. Genesis Genomic's platform scrutinizes diseased and non-diseased tissue using extremely sensitive techniques and state-of-the-art equipment.
Size of DNA vs. mtDNA
In contrast to nuclear DNA, mitochondrial DNA holds the written equivalent of about ten pages; however, we expect that these ten pages serve as an indicator of the health of nuclear DNA. Any changes in nuclear DNA, signifying the onset of cancer, are communicated very early to mtDNA, causing changes in the genetic alphabet of these ten pages. It may be possible for these changes to be found and recognized for a potentially early diagnosis at the DNA level. This early detection is essential to early intervention, by a new generation of developing treatments designed to eliminate cancer at the DNA level.
Two research and development laboratory facilities located in Thunder Bay, Ontario and Newcastle, England have been the sites of several important discoveries in molecular diagnostics and as a result, Genesis Genomics is geared to offer two molecular diagnostic tests in 2008.
Current research and development efforts are directed towards the discovery of biomarkers for tumour aggression, and early breast cancer detection. Genesis Genomics has entered into a number of collaborations to maintain its position on the leading edge of biomarker discovery.
